The Psychiatrist, under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager and the Clinical Supervisor, is responsible for diagnosing, treating, evaluating and helping manage medical and psychosocial conditions.
Responsible for prescribing, directing and administering psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders of clients.
The position is also responsible for documenting patient information in the EHR/RPMS system, rendering services to a broad-based patient base within the scope of services for which they are licensed while rendering psychiatric patient care in accordance with generally accepted standards of Psychiatric practice.
This position will also apply and maintain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local government laws and accrediting agencies.
This position will also apply standards established from time to time by third-party payer; conduct him/herself in accordance with the philosophy and mission of the Sault Tribe including the Sault Tribe Behavioral Health Program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following) • Provides a wide range of medical and health services including assessment of patients, diagnosis, and treatment, evaluating the effectiveness of care, and changing or modifying treatment.
• Maintains competency and renders broad based care within their scope of services and generally accepted standards of care.
• Prescribe, direct, or administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders.
• Gather and maintain patient information and records, including social or medical history obtained from patients, relatives, or other professionals.
• Maintains historical records by documenting symptoms, medications, and treatment events and writing summaries within the EHR/RPMS System.
• Design individualized care treatment plans by determining nature and extent of cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders and establishing treatment goals and methodologies.
• Maintains interdisciplinary treatment by reviewing treatment plans and progress, and consulting and collaborating with primary care physicians, mental health therapists, nurses, and other health care providers.
• Improves staff competence by providing training and discussions regarding the interrelationship between psychosocial and physiological problems, psychotropic medications, crisis intervention, and related issues, and provides direction and assistance to personnel assisting in the care of patients.
• Analyze and evaluate patient data or test findings to diagnose nature or extent of mental disorder by observing behaviors; reviewing medical history and related documents; selecting, administering, and interpreting psychological tests; and ordering laboratory tests and evaluating results.
• Counsel outpatients or other patients during office visits.
• Examine or conduct laboratory or diagnostic tests on patients to provide information on general physical condition or mental disorder.
• Advise or inform guardians, relatives, or significant others of patients' conditions or treatment.
• Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing medical educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
• Review and evaluate treatment procedures and outcomes of other psychiatrists or medical professionals.
Follows privacy act guidelines as established by HIPAA & other privacy regulations.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following) • Attends Departmental, Clinic and organizational meetings and trainings.
• All other job related duties as assigned.
CONTACTS: Immediate peers, peers in other department, immediate supervisor/manager, managers in other departments, executives, customers and outside vendors/service providers, internal and external health care professionals and hospitals.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Position sedentary primarily sitting/lifting of maximum of 10 pounds.
Physical factors include constant use of near/midrange/far vision, depth perception, color/field of vision, typing; frequent sitting, use of hearing; occasional standing, walking, carrying/lifting, pushing/pulling, stooping, kneeling reaching, use of smell, and bending.
Working conditions are typical medical office environment.
Potential hazards include constant infectious exposure, patient contact, computer use and occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, chemicals, needles/syringes and equipment use.
REQUIREMENTS: Education: Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Degree required.
Psychiatry Professional Certification required.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience working in Psychiatric care required.
Certification/License: License to practice as a Psychiatrist in the State of Michigan or ability to obtain by date of hire required.
Must have no previous suspension or revocation of license.
DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) License or ability to obtain within six weeks of hire required.
BLS (Basic Life Support) or CPR Pro (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Pro) Certification or ability to obtain date-of hire required.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) Certification preferred.
Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check.
Must maintain a good moral character standing.
Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance.
Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
Knowledge of Medical Terminology required.
Knowledge of HIPAA and Privacy Act required.
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification preferred.
Must be able to establish and maintain effective communication with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.
Must be able to use word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
Knowledge of RPMS/Electronic Health Record systems preferred.
Must have working knowledge and be able to use office machines, such as calculator, copier, fax, printer and computer.
Must have organizational skills and be able to plan, prioritize and manage work load to meet goals in a timely manner.
Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Must have critical thinking skills.
Must be able to use tact, discretion, and sensitivity in dealing with customers.
Must be able to work under pressure and handle difficult situations.
Must maintain confidentiality.
Native American preferred.
