The Health Unit Coordinator provides clerical and assigned secretarial duties in a nursing unit under the supervision of the professional nurse.
Gathers and disperses complete personal and financial data in order to identify patients, reduce receivables, promotes patient and physician confidence while adhering to the financial policies of the hospital.
Answers the telephone and relays messages.
Organizes and maintains patient charts.
Distributes charts for physician rounds.
Prepares reports and records for nurses.
REPORTS TO: Shift supervisor QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a high school graduate.
Must have clerical experience and knowledge of medical terminology.
Must be able to handle stress and pressure while remaining composed.
Must possess excellent communication skills, numerical skills and have a desire to succeed and grow.
Must be able to accept responsibility and accountability.
Must be a positive role model and be willing to perform other duties within knowledge and training.
Must promote good interpersonal relationships with staff, doctors, administration and the public.
Must demonstrate a daily commitment to the Standards of Behavior and Core Values of BCMH.
POSITION DUTIES: ESSENTIAL Performs all functions necessary to admit a patient, including obtaining authorizations for treatment and provisional diagnosis.
Explains various legal and financial documents to patients.
Collects patient payments and deposits on account at time of service.
Verifies patient employment and/or insurance coverage.
Admits and discharges inpatients and verifies that all information, fees and signatures required have been received.
Accepts, disperses and safeguards valuables for patients, including supervision of return of valuables to deceased patient’s legal next of kin.
Acts as receptionist for patients and visitors.
Performs the functions of the switchboard operator.
Maintains and organizes patient charts: Reviews active charts for completeness: charts vital signs: transcribes physician orders to ensure nurse carry through.
Checks for signatures.
Organizes and establishes new charts for incoming patient for Acute Care, Critical Care, Outpatient Services and Skilled Nursing Services.
Ensures proper patient billing.
Fills out requisition slips properly and in a timely manner.
Maintains nursing unit supplies: orders and replenishes those supplies used in the nursing department.
Communication liaison: takes and gives telephone messages concisely and accurately: pages staff using the paging system, utilizes appropriately the radio system.
Directs visitors and patients, assists visitors in locating doctor offices, specialty departments, patient; accepts and assists in processing admissions.
Protects patient rights, keeps in confidence all information related to the patient.
Performs secretarial duties for the nursing department.
Prepares daily census and activity reports, performs willingly other related tasks as assigned in accordance with knowledge and training.
Records telemetry rhythm strips every shift and applies them to working patient chart.
Is responsible for scheduling alternative Healthcare services, physician appointments.
Maintains constant contact with patients in regard to changing of schedules, dates and times as needed, calls patients the day before to confirm appointment and remind them to bring in their meds.
Responsible for scheduling surgeries, all minor procedures performed in the Outpatient Clinic from physician offices.
Obtains faxed order from doctor with diagnosis and procedure code and verifies prior authorization ANS was obtained.
Checks daily with Registered Nurse to ensure patients have been called for surgery the following day.
Compiles QA reports and distributes to UR and collections for all scheduled surgeries and minor procedures to include procedure codes and diagnosis codes.
Obtains information to scheduled cystoscopies from family physician: information to include: med list, diagnosis and last office note.
Delivers copy of next day’s OR schedule to Admitting and the Day Room each morning.
Enters scheduled surgeries to OR Book daily.
Creates new forms as required.
Participates in the Policy and Procedure Committee.
Maintains Acute Care Wing, Director of Nursing, Operating Room, Emergency Room and Recovery Room policy and procedure books.
Calls doctor offices to verify History and Physical has been scheduled for all eye surgeries and writes date on OR schedule.
Is Responsible for procedure codes and diagnosis codes for patients for pre-ops and ABN’s.
Schedules Fast Track colonoscopies.
Responsibility to department personnel: attends unit meetings and offers suggestions for change; keeps unit area neat and organized; participates in teaching other staff; assists in implementing changes agreed upon by the Supervisor and other staff; keeps supervisor informed of potential and existing problems; seeks assistance from supervisor appropriately and utilizes this information to other areas; arrives at work on time according to schedule, makes schedule changes through appropriate channels.
Responsibility to other department personnel: cooperates with other departments in coordinating patient care.
Responsibility to self-career mobility by attending in-service programs.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of BCMH Corporate Compliance plan, Code of Conduct and reporting process of any compliance concerns.
Shall be responsible for completing educational requirements.
Complies with HIPAA requirements for security and confidentiality.
Observes all infection control and safety policies and procedures.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
