Job Summary:
The Director of Nursing will teach, conduct research and scholarly endeavors that lead to securing extramural funding to support an ongoing research agenda, and service to the program and college.
The position is responsible for providing administrative and strategic direction for pre-licensure undergraduate nursing education.
The Director of Nursing must lead the nursing program through many growth initiatives such as professional accreditation.
The Director of Nursing will meet academic and professional qualifications, demonstrate dedication to academic excellence and student-centered education, and will support the mission and objectives of Bay Mills Community College.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Assist Bay Mills Community College to build an academic department focused on meeting the allied health needs of the college’s surrounding communities and provide the college’s students with the ability to pursue more diverse career opportunities.
Tasks include: Investigate, determine, and pursue the proper licensure for the program.
Ensure program is properly credentialed under the Higher Learning Commission, national, and state accreditation bodies.
Coordinate the development and implementation of educational content and academic programming.
Develop a skills checklist to measure competency of students.
Maintain and submit records as required by the Office of Academic Affairs, Office of the Registrar, the Dean of Science and Allied Health Education, and the Assessment Coordinator, meeting all prescribed deadlines.
Communicate with the Michigan Board of Nursing to meet all requirements.
Create, review, evaluate, revise nursing program curriculum.
The Nursing Director will teach a minimum of 16 credits per year in the program.
Develop community and clinical partnerships that will benefit the program, including cooperative ventures, and clinical placements and ensure training of preceptors.
Lead assessment, in collaboration with academic administration and the nursing community advisory board, and other stakeholders.
Articulate program identity and goals, and their alignment with mission, learning goals, and strategic plan goals and objectives.
Lead strategic planning and develop and implement strategic action plan for the program, including new modes of program delivery.
Coordinate routine program assessment and follow-through.
Work with BMCC’s Marketing and Recruiting specialist to attract students and increase program enrollment.
Develop community and clinical partnerships that will benefit the program, including cooperative ventures, and clinical placements and ensure training of preceptors.
Work with nursing community advisory board to develop and maintain a strong network of support and communication.
Support the pursuit of grant opportunities in collaboration with community agencies and projects.
Work with the Dean of Science and Allied Health Education to determine and communicate admissions criteria.
Communicate promptly with current and prospective students.
Monitor student progress through the program.
Address student academic issues and nursing student complaints promptly in accordance with BMCC policies.
Work with BMCC’s IT department to maintain nursing program website and ensure accuracy.
Coordinate and supervise all program faculty and allied health staff including monitoring educational delivery, providing feedback, and conducting evaluations.
Coordinate with the Dean to develop, review, revise job descriptions as needed.
Participate with college committees and various college activities as requested or assigned, including meetings and events which may be scheduled outside the instructor’s designated office hours.
Coordinate and maintain State of Michigan approval for the Certified Nurse Aide Trainer course.
Organize storage and equipment for nursing programs, ensuring all supplies and equipment are in stock and within manufacture shelf-life.
Other duties may be assigned as determined by the Dean Vice President of Academic Affairs and the President of BMCC.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Understanding of BMCC’s collegiate academic programs.
Advanced word processing and computer skills, understanding of collegiate student and course management systems preferred.
Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Demonstrated understanding of and a commitment to the tribal college mission and purpose teaching and learning, high academic standards, and student success.
Education and Experience: Must have a documented Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.
Must have an unencumbered and current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in Michigan with nursing practice experience for at least five years.
Demonstrated satisfactory experience with teaching for at least two years, coupled with teacher evaluation and training experiences.
Excellent written communication and organization skills; ability to work with students and scholars from diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
Knowledge of issues and trends in nursing education.
Experience in community relations and cultivating partnerships.
Demonstrated good judgment and commitment to program excellence.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with others.
Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans, in a tribal college or educational setting preferred.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit with occasional walking and standing.
Occasionally the employee must bend, reach above shoulder level, kneel, and push/pull.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, with or without support.
The employee must use hands for repetitive action such as simple and/or firm grasping.
Duties are generally performed inside and not exposed to adverse conditions.
